Chunk

Hi All! This is Chunk! He is a Siamese cat with a possible mixture of lynx in him.

Chunk is a neutered 1 year and 4 month old cat. I visited with Chunk the other day and spent a good 20 or so minutes with him, and honestly I found it quite hard to pull myself off the floor to continue on with my day. Chunk is a fun cat. He liked to explore, but then he liked to be on my lap and flop over so I could scratch and rub him. While we were visiting, we had some people come by the bonding room. I asked them if they wanted to pet Chunk which they did. When I picked him up while they came in, he didn't fuss and let me hold him for a bit. He let the visitors, a mom and two small children pet and play with him.

Chunk is a solid cat. Pretty well tempered and very much a cat. Just ready to explore and be around people. If you would like to visit Chunk and/or consider adopting him, he currently resides at PetSmart on Eubank. His ID# is 1652340. Bring it to the personnel at PetSmart and they will help you find him. Although, since there are not as many kennels at PetSmart, it may be easier to find him. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Franky

Hello! This is Franky (A1652346). He is a 3 year old, neutered, domestic short haired cat. He is a stray cat and has been at the shelter for about 2 weeks. His coat is like a tuxedo. Franky is pretty calm. Like all cats he likes to sniff and explore his surroundings. He is a tamed, post-ferral cat. I.e. He used to live on his own in the wild but has succeeded in being domesticated. He certainly appeared very happy to have me around and rubbed me a lot.

Franky is a sturdy cat. He also has a very handsome and low pitched meow. He currently resides at the East-side shelter on Lomas between Eubank and Wyoming. If you are looking for a cat to be your companion, come by for a visit. Bring his ID number to the lobby personnel so they can locate him for you. He will be dressed well for the meeting and will be glad to meet you!

Emma Lou

Hello! I would like you to meet Emma Lou. She is a dil calico domestic shorthaired cat. She has been at the shelter since June 8. I met Emma Lou the other day. She is a very confident cat. There was no insecurity or hesitatation in her step. She seemed well adjusted to people.

Another thing about Emma Lou that caught my attention is her fur. She is incredibly soft! She is quite the feline. She walks about as one who has seen the world and knows what she thinks about it. Although she has met many people in life, she is not afraid to meet new people and assimilate to their lifestyle. She seemed like the ideal cat for any family. She has patience for small children but is interested in doing her own thing if she has to be alone for a while.

If you are interested in meeting Emma Lou, she is currently residing at the eastside animal shelter on Lomas. Take her ID# (A1046885) to the personnel at the front desk, and they will point you to her kennel.

Duchess

Hi! This is Duchess, a stately American pitbull terrier mix. She is one and a half years old and has been at the shelter since February.

Duchess was glad to get out of her kennel as all dogs would be, and she was very amiable. She was glad to walk. She enjoyed being scratched, and she enjoyed sniffing her surroundings including my camera.

Duchess also knows how to kick up her paws in stately fashion like a noble. If you would like to meet this fine lady come to the Eastside shelter on Lomas. Bring her ID# 1636828 to the lobby for assistance in finding her kennel.

Minnie

Hi! This is Minnie. She is a grey and white domestic long haired cat. She is about 2 years old and has lived at the shelter most of her life. Minnie is ready for adoption-ready to share in life, love and rubs with you.

Minnie is a personable cat. Since she has lived in a kennel most of her life, she probably needs to get used to living in a house. She might hide at first, but as with most cats, she is capable of warming up to you and your home. She would do best with a family with mature adults and kids.

Minnie although a very long term pet at the shelter was very eager to come out when I came to her kennel. She was very glad to rub my hand and receive a good scratch behind the ears-nor did she fuss when picked up to go to the bonding room. Minnie currently lives at the Eastside Animal Welfare shelter on Lomas. If you would like to meet her. Take her ID# A1594319 to the personnel in the lobby and they will point you to her kennel. She would be glad to meet you.

Princessa

Hi! Meet Princessa! A fine princess indeed. Princessa came to the shelter as a stray. She is a five year old spayed German shepherd mixed dog. Her black nose is a characteristic of a German shepherd, but her fur and other aspects deem her a mutt. She may have some golden retriever in her by the looks of her coat. Princessa is what you call shy but sweet. She may seem to hold back, but she has a big personality on the inside. Her sweet side did show up, however, when I met her the other day. After walking about a bit, she came up to me and curled up between my legs. She also leaned her head against me.

Princessa, being the princess she is, would do better in the presence of mature dignitaries and not young folk. Being a stray dog isn't the easiest life, but with some good direction and training, Princessa would make a great dog, a fine princess and successor to your dog throne. If you would like to meet Princessa, come to the Eastside animal shelter on Lomas. Bring her ID# (A1558327) to the personnel at the front desk, and they will lead you to her poor chamber where she is currently resides.

Fostering

Hi! You might be wondering which special pet am I going to tell you about today. Today I am going to tell you about ALL of them, well, maybe. Right now there are hundreds of dogs and cats safely waiting for a home at the Eastside, Westside, and Coronodo Mall shelter sites. You might say that's where they should stay or that owning a pet is not for you, but you might like to be hero, swoop in for a small time, do the heroic act and then leave. Well, you can do just that. Fostering a pet is just like that. You fly in like Superman (Iron Man or Captain America if you like) and rescue the pet for a while to your home. After a short period of time, you return the pet to the shelter having loved it and socialized. Having done your heroic act, you return home, or decide to be a hero and do it again.

Fostering is not hard and requires a decent space to let the pet rest. There are dogs and cats to foster-puppies and kittens too. Fostering times generally range from 1-6 weeks. To foster, you can call the animal shelter at (505) 768-1975 or stop at the Eastside or Westide locations. Right now, we have a big need for fostering kittens. This is breeding season for cats, and there are lots of momma cats with kittens lots of kittens without mommas. These little felines need a place to rest that is not so cramped. Sometimes the momma cats just need more space to take care of their litters. Socializing them and getting them used to a house environment is also very helpful. If you like to help people, you also can tell the staff what the kittens are like or write a small note about their personality and such which in turn will help potential adopters know which kitten is right for them.

So maybe you would like to help out. Come foster a little kitty or special pet or spread the word. We hop you jump on board to help the shelter pets of Albuquerque.

Godiva

Hi! Whenever you think of Godiva chocolate, what do you think about? Do you think of a dark creamy delight that tastes good in your mouth? Or maybe you think of the smooth feel of the chocolate in your mouth. What would you think of having this kind of Godiva?

Godiva is a 4 year old, female, domestic long haired cat. She's a mixture of dark, milk and white chocolate. She is a normal cat. With a little time she will get to know you and then would love to go home with you. She would welcome some love and comfort. You might find that she will be a delight just like Godiva chocolate.

Godiva (ID# A1632745) is currently at PetSmart off of Eubank.

Isis

Hi there! Meet Isis, a 2 year old domestic long haired cat. She is healthy and her front paws are declawed. We met Isis shortly after she arrived at the shelter on May 9. She is an owner surrender due to her owners moving. She seemed quite comfortable in her kennel but a little unsure of her new surroundings in the bonding room.

Although a little bit fearful or unsure, Isis seems like a normal cat. Cats are very environment oriented. Their security comes from sniffing everything in the territory and know what is going on. Cats are very capable of learning a new place, a new owner, and becoming quite comfortable.

Although Isis was an Egyptian goddess of fertility and motherhood, this Isis is spayed. Her long black hair is beautiful and would need to be groomed often. Isis currently resides at the Eastside shelter off of Lomas. If you would like to meet her, bring her ID# A1643744 to the lobby and the personnel will show you where she is.

Brent

Hello! Meet Brent, a three year old shorthaired cat. Brent may be three years old, but he has a lot of kitten playfulness in him. Brent is very energetic and inquisitive. Brent did not give off the 'lap cat' impression, but being a tom cat he would enjoy a warm lap from time to time.

Brent's ID# is A1639055. If you would like to come visit Brent and see if he is the right cat for you, bring the ID# to the personnel in the lobby and they will direct you to Brent's kennel. Brent is currently at the Eastside animal shelter and would love to go home with you.

Thunder

Hello. This is Thunder, a 2 year old female domestic medium hair cat. Thunder is love bug. She is also a trained house cat. Thunder came to the shelter because her previous owners were moving. When I met Thunder, she was shy at first and gave me some high pitched mews!

Although shy at first, Thunder and I made an instant connection when I began to scratch her behind the ears. She did not mind when I picked her up and took her to a bonding room. I held her for a while and then set her down. Being in a new place she enjoyed being under the chair for a few minutes and then started to explore. Thunder is the mixture of many cats. She has Himalayan type fur and a bit of orange cat in the lower right corner of her face.

After exploring a while, I picked Thunder up and set her on my lap. She immediately sat down and put her head on my knee. She liked curling up in my lap and resting, and stayed there for about 20 minutes. She would get up and fuss a little-which seemed to be an indication that she has been attention starved. And in a way she has. Going from a comfortable home to the shelter would surprise any cat. With the way she warmed up to me and sat on my lap, it would be a fair assessment to say she would warm up nicely to a new home. Thunder is currently at the Eastside shelter with ID# A1641114. If you come to visit Thunder, bring the ID# to the lobby personnel and they will direct you to Thunder's kennel.

Jackson

Hi! This is Jackson, a four year old Chinese Sharpei mix. Jackson is a calm dog. He did very well on a leash. I used a treat to teach him how to sit, and he responded well to my instructions. Jackson keeps his kennel very clean a sign that he is house trained.

Jackson is also very attentive. For some information on the Chinese sharpe breed, check out the American Kennel Club website at http://www.akc.org/breeds/chinese_shar_pei/. Click here for some fun facts.

Jackson's ID# is A1633390. He is located at the Eastside animal shelter.

Bubba

Meet Bubba, a four year old male Anatolian shepherd dog. Bubba is fun loving dog that was super excited to get out of his kennel and stretch his legs. Anatolian shepherds are part of the working group of dogs per the American Kennel Club (see http://www.akc.org/breeds/anatolian_shepherd_dog/

According to the AKC, they originated in Turkey and were bred to be shepherd and guard dogs. They are loyal and good with children but need some supervision "around them in case they interpret rough plas as a need to guard 'his' child." Anatolians were also bred to make independent decisions while herding and can be a little slow in responding to commands. For more info follow the link to the ACK website given above.

Bubba enjoyed being out. He is good with the leash. Being a big dog, he does need to be held firmly on the leash. If you are interested in meeting Bubba, come to the eastside shelter. Take his ID# (A1573852) to one of the staff in the shelter lobby. They will point you to Bubba's kennel.

The Three Musketeers!

It’s the Three Musketeers! Introducing Mia, Manni, and Mulan! Mia is a five year old cat, and Manni and Mulan are 2 years and 5 months male pit/terrier mixes. For each of their stories, read on!

Mia is a spayed domestic shorthair cat. My husband and I took her out the other day to visit and get acquainted. Mia likes to explore and is very nimble. She really enjoyed playing on the cat tower and sniffing around. She has a history of bladder stones which requires a special diet of Hills C/D which is not very expensive and is comparable to Iams cat food. Although this is a health condition, diet is a key to keeping this kitty happy.

Volunteer Laure has worked with Mia and says that Mia likes to lick people-although she may not do that to everyone. Mia is the type of cat that would love to be in your house with a place to roam and love to share. Cats do not like change, and sometimes they can seem grouchy or indifferent when you meet them. Cats tend to be independent, but once they get used to their new home they can make excellent companion pets. If you are interested in visiting Mia, come to the Eastside Animal Shelter. Her ID# is A0938134. For more pictures of Mia click this link.

Musketeer number 2 is Manni. Manni is a 2 years and 5 month old dog. Although Manni has some pit traits, he does walk with his nose to the ground which is a characteristic of hound dogs.  He has been in foster care and learned to live in a house. He likes big pillows to rest on and a place to run an exercise. He would probably enjoy traveling and the great outdoors with you. From his foster experience, we know that he likes other dogs and is not a couch jumper.

When I met Manni, he was at Lucky Paws at the Coronado mall in his kennel. Unlike some dogs who jump at you from their kennel, Manni just looked at me with a sweet smile. He was pretty decent on the leash too. Manni is currently located at Lucky Paws at the Coronado. His ID# is A1632679.

Musketeer number 3 is Mulan, also a pit/terrier mix. Mulan has also been in foster care and proven to be a decent house dog. He is a great dog with a big personality. When Mulan saw my camera, he tilted his head, perked up his ears and posed!

Seeing him in his kennel he would put himself right up to the door and look out with his head tilted down and these endearing doggy eyes. Lots of love and fun can be had with Mulan with careful attention given to drawing him out.

He also seems like the type of dog that would like to go on adventures with his future owners. He is currently located at Lucky Paws at the Coronado Mall with ID# A1629904.

Mike

Hello! This is Mike. He is a seven year old smooth coated chihuahua. He has good energy but is pretty calm. A trend I have noticed in the shelter is that the chihuahuas like to be held! When I first met Mike he was being walked on a leash along with another dog Caitlin. He roamed the shelter with the volunteer enjoying his stroll and a chance to stretch his legs. When he came back he was being held and carried.

According to the American Kennel Club, chihuahuas "are alert dogs with terrier-like qualities. They are good with families if the children are gentle and patient." They are intelligent and do not require a lot of excercise. (see http://www.akc.org/breeds/chihuahua/ for more information) If you are interested in visiting or adopting him, Mike is currently located at the Eastside shelter with ID# A0884471.

Pebbles

Hello! This is Pebbles. Pebbles is a 5 year old female labrador retriever. Volunteer Nathan and I took her out of her kennel last Saturday. Pebbles is a happy dog. She is calm and knows how to sit. We discovered this when I asked Nathan "Does she know how to sit?" When I said "sit," she sat down!

Pebbles also appears to be very house trained. Pebbles does have a slightly crooked knee on the back right leg, but in walking and sitting down she had no problems. She is decently leash trained. She might need a little extra training, but golden retrievers are smart dogs and will be able to learn what you teach them.

According to the American Kennel Club, golden retrievers are "intelligent and eager to please." They also need plenty of exercise due to their large size. For more information on golden retrievers, visit the AKC website. Pebbles is currently located at the Eastside shelter. Her ID # is A1635126.

Astea

Hi! This is Astea, a male short haired cat. He is about six years old. Astea is what you might call a love bug. He of course came into the little bonding room and sniffed around, but he was very interested in sniffing my hand and getting scratched.

Astea is very much a lap cat. He is affectionate and calm, and likes to be petted. He is very laid back and would love a soft spot or a lap to relax on. Astea reminds me of the cat I adopted from the shelter. My cat was very affectionate when I met him in the shelter-a good sign that he would be very affectionate and an excellent cat once he got used to our home.

Astea is currently located at the Eastside shelter. His ID# is A1637441. Be sure to have this number on hand when you call or come for a visit to easily identify him. Astea seems like the type of cat that might hide under the bed when he gets to your house, but after a little bit of time, would warm up nicely and be a fun, loving part of your family and a good lap cat. For some more pictures of Astea, click here

Charles

Hi! This is Charles, a medium black cat. He is an eight month old kitten with lots of energy. I visited with Charles the other day, taking him out of his cage for a little exercise and socialization. He jogged around the bonding room a little sniffing the area and exploring as most cats do.

He enjoyed playing on the cat tower which also had a scratching post. He scratched some. He would jump and attack the leopard parts of the tower. He still has a lot of kitten energy enjoyed playing with the toys we offered him. He would probably enjoy a good space to romp and explore and a good scratching post.

As with most Tomcats though, the older he get the more he will mellow out. They tend to sleep more in their later years. Charles is currently at Lucky Paws in the Coronado Mall. His ID# is A1634055. If you would like to come and visit him, bring the ID# so that the staff help you easily find where he is. We hope you will consider giving Charles a home. For a few more pictures of Charles click the following link.

Gordon

Hello! Let me introduce to you Gordon, a five year old pit bull mix dog. He is one of the many dogs currently living and waiting for adoption at Albuquerque Animal Welfare's (AWD) Eastside Shelter. Gordon is a big dog with a lot of fun and energy all wrapped up inside of him.

Gordon likes people and other dogs. If he sees another dog, he gladly goes up to meet the dog and hopefully to play. Karen, a volunteer at the shelter, has been working with Gordon for some time now, keeping him healthy and exercised. Gordon is good with children. He is also very neat and tidy keeping his kennel very clean, which means he is house trained.

Based on lots of observation by many volunteers while working with Gordon, Gordon is what you would  call a lap dog-even a nanny dog. He is not aggressive. Because he is a pit mix, he is high energy and needs exercise and a good place to run. These are qualities of a pit bull. The breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club because pit bulls are more of a mix of several breeds.

Gordon is available for adoption with A number A1597840. He is at the Eastside shelter on Lomas between Eubank and Wyoming.

If you are looking for a decent family dog, come see Gordon at the shelter. If you have other dogs, feel free to  bring them for a meet and greet with Gordon. He would love to go home with you.
